- Chris’s Night Hike through the Rain Forest
We were finally ready to start our night hike in the jungle.
Our tour guide, Chris, was just as excited as my dad and I. We started out on the path and then onto the first hanging bridge. We were walking along the path, when Kaitlin spotted a Daddy Longlegs. Chris told us that a Daddy Longlegs couldn’t bite us because there mouth is too small. Then he picked it up and showed us that Daddy Longlegs actually have algae growing on their stomach. Then he put it down, but with the algae facing up. And the spider adapted! It was upside-down! We walked some more, and then we spotted something moving. Looking closer, Chris told us that it was a Nine Banded Armodillo! We watched it as it scampered away. we kept walking, and me and him were talking about the Ferdilance. Apparently, the Ferdilance is the most dangerous snake in Costa Rica. We were talking, but then he stopped. He shown his light onto something, and then I saw it. It was a very big spider. He told us that this was the dangerous spider that he was talking about. We looked at it, then he poked it with a stick. It retreated while all of us jumped at the sudden movement. We then moved on.
We were walking when again, he stopped us. He shown his light onto a moving red line. He then told us that it was a Fake Coral Snake. “The way to identify that it’s fake is by its rings. They don’t go all the way around when it’s a Fake Coral Snake.” He shone his light on it some more for Dad, then we moved on. We went onto the second hanging bridge, and then Dad said he saw eyes from his flashlight reflecting off something. The tour guide shown his flashlight into the tree and we saw two little somethings. He got very excited and told us they were kinkajous. They went down the tree and up another, and my dad was taking pictures rapidly. We then walked a little farther, and then he told us he saw a sloth. We looked up, and sure enough, there was a sloth. It was very itchy, and kept kicking itself. He then started moving around the small place. We kept on moving to get a better view of the face. We finally turned back to go to the gardens. we heard some rustling, and Chris pointed his flashlight towards a tree. We saw a face. At first, Chis thought it was a type of kinkajou, but then he told us it was a possum. Dad wanted a picture of the face, so we all turned off our flashlight off, then on. We kept on doing it until Dad was satisfied. Then we went to the garden where we walked around and only saw a Cat Snake. When we were done with that, we finished up the tour, and then we were done.
