It was our first day in Cost Rica and we were all exhausted.
It was around dinner time and we were all hungry for we had not eaten much due to the plane rides ad the time change. Having rented a car we took a drive to one of the recommended restaurants near where we were renting the house (Casa Maganda). We eventually found Restaurante Vista Mar. It was just a few miles from the house, though it seemed to take forever to get there. It was small but it had great food. I had pasta with chicken that was mixed with the most delicious white cream sauce. Even thought I thought that was good, even more delicious meals were yet to come.
After getting a good nights sleep we ventured on to the second day. My parents decided that it would be a good idea to drive to the top of a 3,000 ft mountain to eat some authentic Costa Rica food. Driving through windy roads up the mountain took about 50 minutes, none was in a great mood but as soon as the sent hit our noses we felt like that we would not be disappointed. After or daring our food we settled down to wait, as we waited we found our first Toucan and other animals. At last the food arrived, it was so good! I had ordered the chicken, it was nice and juice and there was also the rice, the black beans, the sour tasting salad, and the sweet tasting plantain. Compared to the food from the day before it was over a hundred times better. (Editor’s Note: Steve also loved this “soda,” called Rancho Shadday, and you can read about his experience in The Day of the Toucans. The open air restaurant has no website, but there is a nice review in The Costa Rica Star that matches our experience, and which includes instructions on how to get there from Jaco)
On the third night we went to a place that was recommended in our binder for the house, Adventure Dining at Pura Vida Gardens. It was lovely there, we got to see the sun set and we walked through the beautiful gardens that were there. For the appetizers they had chips and salsa along with other snack sized food. After we were given a salad of many vegetables, the main course was presented. It was the best pork along with roast vegetables, shrimp, and fish. It was already dark and the man that was running it gave my sister a tube that he lit and all of a sudden there were ‘pops’ as fireworks popped out of the tube. As they glittered in the sky the dessert was served, fine vanilla ice cream with apple pie filling except that it was bananas not apples.
Even as the adventure continues, the food in Costa Rica is a lot better that a hamburger that you would get at in & out or at any other place with burgers.
