A Lack of Communication
Today we went on a walk around Prague and we found this little park and it had like a mini zipline and there were these Czech kids and we were all playing on the zipline too. There was this one kid that could speak a little English but the other did not. And that led to a problem. So I was doing this thing for Steve were I ran with him, and then flung him toward the stopper so he went faster and higher in the air. The kid that could not speak English told us by motion that he wanted a turn so we gave him a turn. But he was not securely on the seat – in fact he was falling off – so when it hit the stopper, the little boy was flung into the sand. The other boy and I rushed over and I asked if he was okay but he did not understand what I was saying. But Sherpa Mama says that he probably read my expression. I felt useless knowing I could not communicate with him. I felt bad because he said something in Czech, but I could not understand him. I did not know that I should have slowed him down to prevent the fall. He was fine but I still feel bad.
I was telling Sherpa mama that I think there should be only one language so everyone can communicate. Then, if there is a life-threatening situation people can communicate and tell someone to run or try to defend themselves. Just think about it if your life was in danger and there was a person behind you with the gun and there was a person in front of you that spoke a different language and he was trying to tell you in that language that you did not understand to run or try to defend yourself and you died because you could not understand. That’s a problem. But if everyone understood one language your life could have been saved. Just all the countries presidents would come together in one place and decide on a language that would be great because then our lives can be saved.
If I was the one to pick the language I would use English. Not because it’s my language that I speak fluently, but because the whole world seems to learning or already speaks English. I honestly think English is the easiest language to learn, but everyone else may not agree. So if we could compromise on two or three languages, that would be great. Everyone learns those languages, and then we can be safe. If your life was in danger and someone could warn you, then you would understand what they said and most likely live. In this way, when I asked that boy if he was okay, he would have understood me and given me an answer. I think this might be a problem for some people, because they may speak languages and don’t want to give them up, even if it would save lives. Let me know what you think in the comment box.
