Bright Nights in Iceland
One of the things that I talked with the kids about before we left was how long the days would be in Iceland. We looked up the sunrise and sunset times and laughed at how the girls’ room would get the most sleep (the only advantage of an inside stateroom = pitch black no matter what time of day) and the boys would be woken by the sun early morning.
To give you perspective, this picture is at the end of our first day in Reyjavik when we drove back from the Blue Lagoon. This was taken at 11:58PM right before we got back on the boat!
So on June 24 when we were in the northern part of Iceland nearing Akuryri and the Sunset was at 12:04AM and Sunrise at 1:34AM – I could not resist the chance to see it and say I witnessed the shortest night of my life. What would it feel like to have a day/night that seemed endless and unbounded? Maybe the frazzled Mom/wife/career woman/aspiring coffee shop singer/”House of Good Intentions” entreprenuer wanted to see if the solution to getting more done in the hours of the day could somehow be solved by having no actual end to the day!
Poobah agreed to stay awake and watch the “night” unfold. We fought off sleep by going up to the top deck (REALLY cold on a cruise ship in the northern part of Iceland). It was really cloudy so not as glorious as I had hoped. Here is how it unfolded:
Was it a cool thing to say I have done – YES! Did I get any additional time to accomplish things – no. So it will just have to be a great memory and experience for me to recall on June nights for years to come.
