Throughout the Disney Cruise, we watched many shows and other forms of entertainment. I consider entertainment to be all movies, shows, and parties/other. So, I am going to tell you about the entertainment, and give it a rating.
Let’s start with movies. The movies on board the Disney Magic were amazing, and they were all Disney. The movie theater on the boat showed a selection of about 10 movies, all of them relatively new.
My sister and I saw Finding Dory the day it premiered, and the movie was absolutely fantastic!! It was in 3D, and it was way better than expected. It made me think of Dory in a whole new way.
We also saw The Jungle Book, Captain America: Civil War, and Inside Out. Overall, I loved the gigantic movie theater, and enjoyed all of the movies. However, my father did not like the 3D feature after a while because it hurt his eyes. The problem was that almost all of the movies were in 3D. I saw it as unnecessary. I would give the movie theater (the Buena Vista Theater) and all of the movies there a 4 ½ stars out of 5.
Now we can talk about all of the entertainment in the Walt Disney Theater (yes, I know, it’s amazing that there’s 2 theaters on one ship). I have very mixed ratings here, because a couple of shows were amazing, while others were way overrated! Every night we had the opportunity to see a different show before our dinner seating, though we did not see them all.
- The first show, All Aboard: Let the Magic Begin, was about welcoming us to the Disney Magic. It was okay, and I would probably give it a 3 ½ stars. This was just about the service and other features about the Disney Magic. One thing I thought was very cool was that after the little show was over, we got to see a preview of one man who was performing later in the week!
- One night we watched Max Winfrey perform his “stunt comedy” routin, featuring some impressive juggling, active audience participation, and a lot of luaghts. He ended his skit juggling tennis rackets while riding on a unicycle around the stage! I’m glad I saw that one!! 4 ½ stars.
- Twice Charmed: An Original Twist on the Cinderalla Story was the first Disney show that I really enjoyed. This show was about Cinderella’s stepmother and sisters having their own evil fairy godfather who gave them the power to stop Cinderella from finding her prince. My favorite character was actually the smaller step sister. She was emotional, and funny to watch. I loved it and rate the performance 5 stars, easily.
- We also saw JuNnk, a European band that uses every day stuff and other “junk” to make music, mostly percussion. They were interesting, to say the least, and very energetic. I especially liced the songs they performed with their bottle-flutes! 4- 4 ½ stars.
- Kara Massey and Kevin Lindsay, married Broadway performers who starred in Tarzan and Newsies, shared with us the story of their lives and how they came to be on Broadway. They used Disney songs in an interesting way to complement their stories. And man, they were great singers! I really enjoyed the experience, and learning about how they made it to Broadway, especially since that is my dream.
- Tangled: the Musical was just disappointing. The actress playing Rapunzel was pitchy (off-key) and none of the other characters stood out. I think Disney did a poor job turning the story into a musical, because it was very awkward at some points. The only nice part was the song where Rapunzel and Flynn had their “moment”, and that was because of the effect of the ensemble going through the audience with lanterns on a stick in their hands. That was beautiful. I’d say 2 ½ stars at most for the whole experience.
- We saw a magic show called Hector is Magic, and he performed many stunts that seem impossible to be pulled off, such as somehow managing to change places with his assistant while completely inside a potato bag, locked in a chest, and having his assistant on top of the locked chest. It was crazy! I believe that he was actually a wizard, and his assistant too, and they are taking advantage of juggles by doing some simple tricks with their wands. Or they could just be very organized. Either one I guess. Well, 4- 4 ½ stars.
- The last show, Disney Dreams – An Enchanted Classic was really amazing, 5 stars. The main character was played by my favorite actress aboard the Disney Magic. It was about a girl who didn’t believe in magic and wishes coming true, and so a bunch of Disney characters sang famous Disney songs to bring her spirits up and allow her to believe. It was nice. I enjoyed it, especially the fact that they found a way to incorporate so many Disney songs into the show.
All in all, the shows aboard the Disney Magic were great, and I recommend them to anyone who likes entertainment.
Lastly, I would like to talk about the “other” category, which included game shows and parties. There was Freezing the Night Away (the Frozen deck party), which was qute possibly the worst thing on the Disney Cruise. Everyone was shoved up against one another and were cold. The party was poorly planned, because most of the time they asked the people to dance, a thing difficult to do with limited space. I was precariously perched on the edge of a stair, and I had to be careful not to fall. It was pretty sad. However, we also watched a couple of game shows, where 4 teams go up to the front and then the rest of the people answer for themselves. In that way, they were interactive for everyone. Once, for a “Mickey Mania” trivia game show, Sherpa Mama and Cupcake got picked to compete in the front. They came in dead last, but it was fun to watch!!
And there was one show we saw in Fathoms that was fantastic: Taylor Mason, a comedian/ventriloquist/musician. His act was fall-out-of-your-seat funny, even more so because “Steve” was selected from the audience to help with his dummy “Romeo.” Steve was constantly moving Romeo’s mouth, and what seemed to come out was “Help me! Help me!” Really, really funny!
I hope you felt you got a little more insight on the entertainment on the Disney Magic, and I hope you enjoyed reading!!
